After the U.S. and Israel launched air strikes on Saturday morning, Iran appears to have targeted German Bundeswehr bases in Iraq and Jordan. According to “Der Spiegel”, several Iranian missiles and drones were fired at a multinational base near Erbil airport in northern Iraq and at a Bundeswehr field camp in al‑Azraq in eastern Jordan. The final attack occurred on Sunday morning. All projectiles and drones were intercepted by air‑defence systems, but a U.S. soldier sustained minor injuries from falling debris.
In anticipation of retaliation, the Bundeswehr had already reduced its presence to a minimum before the U.S.‑Israeli air strikes began. In northern Iraq-where German forces train local security personnel-German personnel were scaled back to an absolute minimum. Once a secure environment is established, the German contingent in Jordan will also be decreased.
