According to reports from Iranian state media, the country claims to have successfully hit a U.S. warship with two missiles near the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian sources stated that the vessel was attacked after disregarding warnings issued by the Iranian Navy.
The incident follows a period of escalating tensions, with U.S. President Donald Trump having previously announced that the U.S. military would provide assistance to stranded vessels in the Gulf. In response, Iran had threatened any foreign force attempting to enter the Strait.
Iranian reports allege that the U.S. ship sustained damage from the attack, forcing it to change its course and depart the area. Initially, there was no confirmation of the event from the U.S. military.
This confrontation occurs against a backdrop of deep instability in the region. Since February 28, the day of the first military actions by the U.S. and Israel in the current escalation, Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz for oil and gas tankers, contributing to a global rise in energy prices. The United States later responded by implementing a blockade aimed at preventing Iran from attempting to collect fees for transit.
