Icy Rain and Snowstorms Trigger Spike in Accidents and Power Outages Across Eastern Germany

Slush rain over the east and northeast, together with snowfall in the south, caused a wave of accidents and service disruptions on Monday morning. The German weather service (DWD) identified the main affected regions as parts of Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Berlin and Saxony‑Anhalt, while the warning for Saxony was lowered. Neighboring states also felt the impact, with the DWD issuing cautions about impeded road and rail traffic. In the northeast, a particular risk of rapid ice build‑up on infrastructure and vegetation was noted.

In Baden‑Württemberg, the alert for heavy morning snowfall had been eased, although several areas of Bavaria remained under threat. The DWD warned of significant traffic and public‑transport delays in those parts and warned that trees might collapse under the weight of the snow.

The fallout was immediate in Würzburg, where tram and bus services were suspended until further notice. Across Lower Franconia, in‑person schooling was cancelled entirely.

Deutsche Bahn announced that winter weather in southwestern Germany would hinder long‑distance train services, and Hamburg’s S-Bahn also reported operational restrictions.
