On Thursday morning, freezing rain turned into slick ice in eastern Germany, causing traffic chaos in several regions. The German Meteorological Service reported that Berlin, Brandenburg, and Mecklenburg‑Western Pomerania were most affected, while parts of Saxony and Saxony‑Anhalt were also hit by similar conditions.
The weather pattern behind the event is a high pressure system over Scandinavia with easterly flow. This directs cold continental air north and east, whereas Atlantic troughs bring milder sea air south and west. As a result, the affected federal states have already seen multiple weather‑related road accidents.
At Berlin-Schönefeld Airport (BER), aircraft are currently grounded because of the poor conditions. The airport authority advises passengers to check their airline’s flight status; however, landings remain permitted.
The weather warnings remain in effect until Thursday afternoon. They could be extended or expanded to cover additional areas if conditions persist.
