In light of the soaring fuel prices, the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) has urged employers to adopt flexible home‑office arrangements.
Stefan Körzell, a board member of the DGB, told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that every drop of fuel saved matters. He added that employers must give their workers the option of working either from the office or from home. This choice can cut commuting distances and spare employees money.
Körzell also cautioned that not all employees can realistically work from home. If the crisis persists, further relief measures will be needed. He suggested possibilities such as a mobility allowance or a flat‑rate for energy costs. In addition, he called for a surpluses‑tax on excess corporate profits to stop companies from profiting excessively during the downturn.
