The Greens have denied that they intend to propose former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) for the post of Federal President. “Angela Merkel has already spoken herself, so there is no truth to the claim” said Greens caucus leader Britta Haßelmann in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition). “At this time we have neither discussed nor decided on a candidate for the presidential election” she added.
Merkel herself dismissed the speculation, replying to a request from the “Tagesspiegel” (Friday edition) that the notion is absurd.
Earlier, “Bild” reported that within the CDU leadership there was concern that the Greens might propose Merkel for the presidency. Thus far no former chancellor has taken the office of president after leaving office.
The Federal Convention will decide on the successor to Frank‑Walter Steinmeier in early 2027. The Union is expected to be the largest faction in the convention, and calls for a first female head of state are increasingly vocal.
