As gasoline prices climb, the political opposition is criticizing the federal government harshly. Ines Schwerdtner, the leader of the Left Party, told the “Bild” (Tuesday edition) that looking at the gas prices over recent weeks gives the impression that the federal government is composed of total failures. She stated that the conflicting proposals particularly show that “the country is being governed by people who have no plan”. She criticized the coalition members, noting that while the SPD and the CDU/CSU are unable to agree on how to ease the burden on citizens, “the oil corporations continue to profit”. Furthermore, Andreas Audretsch, the deputy head of the Green Party’s parliamentary group, expressed concern over “price shocks concerning food and heating” and urgently called on the Federal Minister of Economics to act. Audretsch told the “Bild” that Katherina Reiche should immediately present a clear crisis action plan and end the confusion within the coalition. He added that the current situation represents “a fatal crisis management, even from the Chancellor”.
