Leading figures within the Green party are viewing Cem Özdemir’s election as Minister-President in the green-black coalition in Baden-Württemberg as a strategic blueprint for the entire party.
Federal Parliamentary Deputy President Omid Nouripour stated that Özdemir’s success demonstrates that Green politics can gain major support if the party moves beyond its niche and addresses the center of society. According to Nouripour, success belongs to those who challenge people rather than overwhelming them, and who listen to voters instead of assuming they know better. Furthermore, he stressed that achieving this is only possible through internal unity, noting that divided parties do not get elected. Building on this, he also demanded greater operational autonomy for the group and party chairpersons. Citing these demands, he urged his party to ensure strong results at the autumn party conference to confirm Felix Banaszak and Franziska Brantner in their respective roles.
This emphasis on a unified, broad, and center-aligned strategy was echoed by Sebastian Schäfer, the coordinator of the Realo wing within the Green Bundestag parliamentary group. Schäfer commented that Özdemir’s achievements represent a “central point of orientation for the future of the Greens, even at the federal level”.
