Green Party Demands European Action Amid Looming US Troop Withdrawal

The Green Party is calling for a coordinated European response following the United States’ possible announcement regarding the withdrawal of 5,000 soldiers from Germany. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, the Bundestag faction’s spokesperson for security policy, Sara Nanni, expressed her hope that the Chancellor will spend the day communicating with Paris, Madrid, London, and Rome. She noted that the reality of whether Trump’s threats will materialize remains to be seen.

Nanni stressed the necessity for the US to recognize where and how dependent it is on European support to advance its own interests. She added that this dependence could possibly encourage “a gambler like Trump to bet less high”.

Furthermore, she criticized CDU politician Friedrich Merz for remaining caught between close ties and distance with the US presidency. However, Nanni emphasized that it is not too late for a change in strategy, concluding that the optimal path forward must be “Europeanly coordinated”.
