Winfried Hermann, the Transport Minister for Baden-Württemberg and a member of the Green Party, is set to join one of the prominent speakers at an Easter march organized by the peace movement. According to Hermann, who spoke to the Funke Media Group’s newspapers, he will be addressing the non-partisan “Peace Alliance Freudenstadt” in Alpirsbach on Easter Saturday.
He stated that, like many people, he is concerned about the militarization of international politics, drawing particular attention to what he views as illegal wars of aggression waged by Russia, Israel, and the USA. This takes a stance different from Franziska Brantner, the Green Party leader, who had previously criticized the Easter marches, arguing that support should be shown to those who are attacked, not those who are causing aggression. Hermann disagreed with this, noting that peace advocates have long been a minority within the Green Party. However, he reassured that the party stands with the victims. He added that this is insufficient, arguing that greater efforts toward peace and more diplomacy are necessary. He emphasized that if the objective is peace, preparation should focus on promoting peace rather than war, pointing out that the German Basic Law contains a clear mandate for peace for both the government and the populace.
Hermann further labeled the US and Israeli actions against Iran, as well as the Israeli strikes in Lebanon, as “illegal and brutal” according to international law, noting the disregard for civilian populations. He concluded by stating that the peace movement is sending a clear signal to halt military interventions based on questionable justifications and to stand against autocratic regimes.
