The Green party leader, Felix Banaszak, has stated that a reform of the statutory health insurance system is necessary, arguing that the system is currently facing financial difficulties. He warned that addressing expenditure is crucial as part of this overhaul.
However, Banaszak strongly criticized the proposals put forward by Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU). According to him, these suggestions tend to burden contribution payers and businesses unevenly. He argued that this sends the wrong message at a time when many people are already struggling with rising costs of living and the economy is under pressure.
More pointedly, he suggested that the Minister lacks the resolve to confront influential lobbying interests and tackle the genuinely major cost drivers within the health system. Banaszak pointed to existing ideas, such as funding non-insured services through tax revenues or implementing a consistent limitation on drug costs. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of focusing on prevention to achieve long-term cost reductions, noting that any cost-cutting measure in this area would ultimately be costly twice over.
In conclusion, Banaszak urged Minister Warken to move beyond merely treating the symptoms, calling instead for a fair distribution of burdens and the courage to address the root causes of excessive costs. He warned that failing to do so would erode public trust and worsen the existing imbalances within the system.
