Green and CDU Demand Halt to Diet Increase for Bundestag Members

The upcoming automatic increase in allowances for members of the Bundestag is facing significant opposition from multiple political parties.

The Green party, for instance, has taken a firm stance against the raise scheduled for July 1st. Helge Limburg, the party’s political spokesman, stated that raising the allowances right now would send the wrong signal. The Greens plan to suspend the automatic adjustment mechanism this year, arguing that many citizens are struggling with significantly higher living costs amid what they describe as a never-before-seen crisis-a situation expected to worsen.

A similar sentiment was expressed by Wilhelm Gebhard, a Member of the Bundestag from the CDU. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Gebhard suggested that the current volatile climate makes it beneficial for everyone to practice financial restraint. He added that an allowance increase is simply ill-timed given the current state of crisis, and therefore, he advocates for the suspension of the raise.

This call for restraint is echoed by several politicians from the SPD. The payments-known as allowances-have been linked to the development of the Nominal Wage Index since 2014, causing them to increase automatically according to that index. These political figures are collectively pushing for a voluntary waiver of the planned increase.
