Following Syrian transitional president Ahmed al‑Scharaa’s visit to Berlin, the German left-wing party Die Linke warned against sending Syrians back to their country. Clara Bünger, the party’s spokesperson for internal and refugee policy, explained that “Syria is far from safe and there must be no deportations to that country”. She called for a nationwide ban on returning Syrians.
Bünger noted that hundreds of thousands of Syrians are employed in Germany, with tens of thousands working in essential or “engpass” jobs. She stressed that these workers have long become part of German society and that suddenly questioning their residence would be both unsolidary and economically absurd.
The party also highlighted ongoing violations in Syria since al‑Scharaa’s rise to power, adding that serious massacres of ethnic and religious minorities continue, with thousands of civilians killed.
