Following the oil price drop due to the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, the President of the German Federal Cartel Office, Andreas Mundt, anticipates that gasoline prices at service stations will fall quickly. Speaking to the “Handelsblatt” (Friday edition), Mundt stated, “Falling crude oil prices are a clear signal-and they should be reflected at the pump soon after”. He pointed out a recent trend, noting, “It was clearly demonstrated that price increases were passed on very quickly. Therefore, it would only be logical if the same applied when things are going the other way”. Mundt also cited the significant rise in fuel prices in Germany following the start of the Iran conflict. He added that in other countries, contractual or regulatory frameworks sometimes delay price adjustments. Nevertheless, despite the recent sharp increases in both gasoline and diesel prices, the Federal Cartel Office President has not declared the new regulations for gas stations unsuccessful. Mundt explained in the “Handelsblatt” that it will only be possible to assess whether the regulation has a dampening effect on prices later on. He stressed the importance of the new rule in ending the constant fluctuation of prices, which could involve up to 50 changes in a day. According to Mundt, consumers will benefit in the long term by being able to compare prices better and make more informed decisions about where to fuel. These conveniences, he concluded, would be valued in less turbulent times.
