Germany’s Green Party has issued a sharp condemnation of recent U.S. military actions against Caracas, urging the German government to actively pressure the Trump administration towards de-escalation and adherence to international law. Katharina Dröge, parliamentary group leader for the Greens, characterized the airstrikes on Venezuela’s capital as a “violation of international law” and a “dangerous military escalation” in a statement released Saturday through the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland. She explicitly called on the German government to publicly denounce the actions and champion de-escalation, respect for state sovereignty and the upholding of international legal frameworks.
While acknowledging the authoritarian nature of Nicolás Maduro’s regime – highlighting concerns regarding electoral manipulation, severe human rights violations and the suppression of political opposition through arbitrary detention – the Greens’ criticism extended beyond Maduro’s actions. The party’s co-leader underscored that the U.S. policy itself is fundamentally flawed, accusing the Trump administration of increasingly prioritizing the “right of might” over the rule of law on the global stage.
Dröge warned that such unilateral actions risk emboldening other nations to disregard international law, potentially leading to a more volatile and unpredictable world order. She argued that the European Union and Germany have a crucial responsibility to explicitly identify and criticize this trend. The Green politician added a pointed critique of Berlin’s past silence, stating that the German government has too often failed to voice concerns regarding the Trump administration’s escalating actions in recent months, a silence she deemed a significant error. This stance places pressure on Chancellor Merkel’s government to adopt a more assertive and potentially confrontational, role in international relations.
