The Central Council of Jews in Germany is escalating pressure on the German government to adopt a more assertive stance against the Iranian regime and actively support the ongoing protests. In a statement released Friday, Council President Josef Schuster criticized Berlin’s cautious diplomatic approach, arguing that the time for measured restraint has definitively passed.
“Germany must, without question, abandon its diplomatic reticence in this pivotal moment” Schuster declared. He emphasized the urgent need for decisive action and civil courage, advocating for unequivocal solidarity with both the Iranian populace and Iranian exiles residing in Germany, who, he noted, have been risking their lives for years in pursuit of freedom.
Schuster’s call for action reflects growing frustration with the government’s response to the escalating unrest. He directly stated that the current theocratic regime “must fall” citing its long history of internal repression, particularly targeting women and its role as a “globally dangerous financier of terrorism”. The protests, he added, represent a “brave fight” against state terror, demanding the overthrow of the ruling body.
The criticism underscores a significant divergence in approaches. While the United States has been comparatively vocal in its support for the demonstrators, the German government has maintained a notably subdued response, primarily issuing appeals for de-escalation and urging restraint from the Iranian authorities. A government spokesperson reiterated this position on Friday, stopping short of explicit endorsement of the protestors or condemnation of the regime’s actions.
This cautious stance has drawn criticism not only from Schuster’s organization but also from within German political circles. Some observers suggest that Germany’s reluctance stems from a desire to avoid unilateral action and maintain channels for potential future dialogue with Tehran. However, Schuster’s direct appeal challenges this strategy, framing it as a missed opportunity to champion fundamental human rights and actively contribute to a potential shift in the geopolitical landscape. The debate highlights a broader tension between Germany’s traditional diplomatic priorities and the increasingly urgent calls for a stronger response to the Iranian government’s actions.
