After the announced resignation of Federal Data Protection Commissioner Louisa Specht‑Riemenschneider on health grounds, the federal government has not yet set a timetable for a replacement.
Deputy spokesperson Steffen Meyer said Wednesday that the resignation had been acknowledged and thanked the commissioner for remaining available until a successor is chosen. He indicated that talks are already underway within the governing coalition and that a strong successor will be presented in due course, though he did not disclose who in the government holds the right to nominate the new commissioner.
Under the Federal Data Protection Act, the German Bundestag elects the commissioner by a majority of its members on a proposal from the federal government; the term lasts five years. Specht‑Riemenschneider has been in office only since September 2024.
