Germany Romania Deepen Arms Cooperation in Berlin

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) welcomed Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan in Berlin on Wednesday and agreed to deepen cooperation in the defence sector.

During a joint press conference, Merz stated that the two leaders would arrange a meeting for their defence ministers in Berlin immediately after or parallel to this visit. The ministers would sign a Memorandum of Understanding on defence cooperation, emphasizing that both countries are taking joint responsibility for the security of Europe and their own nations.

Bolojan added that Romania intends to expand collaboration with Germany, especially in strategic areas such as energy, industry and defence. The agreement will support modernising the defence industry and enable faster responses to security needs.

The chancellor discussed how to address threats from Russia, noting that attacks now continue to expand beyond targeted misinformation and cyber operations to include airspace violations along NATO’s eastern flank. Germany and Romania are tackling these challenges together and decisively. Germany has already provided a fourth participation of Eurofighter jets in airspace monitoring operations over Romania.

Prime Minister Bolojan reminded that Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure are severely affecting the Ukrainian population. He urged that these attacks be taken into account in political and security‑policy decisions.

In addition, he highlighted the Republic of Moldova as a strategic priority for Romania. The stability of Chișinău and Moldova’s European direction are important for the entire region. Opening EU accession negotiations for Moldova is seen as a vital signal for regional security.
