Amid rising oil and gasoline prices, German media outlets reported on Wednesday that the government appears to be planning to release part of the country’s national oil reserves, citing sources within government circles.
Sources say the move is part of an internationally coordinated effort. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has proposed that its member states release up to 400 million barrels of crude oil – an unprecedented scale for a reserve release. According to the Handelsblatt, of those barrels, 19.5 million would come from Germany’s own reserves.
No official confirmation has yet been issued by the federal government. Business Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) is expected to address the capital press about the plan in the afternoon.
