The Federal Ministry of Transport has launched a new funding programme aimed at expanding electric‑vehicle charging infrastructure in and on multi‑unit residential buildings. The initiative seeks to improve access to charging at the roughly nine million off‑street parking spaces nationwide. Grants will cover the purchase and installation of private charging units such as wall‑boxes, the connection to the grid, and any necessary construction work.
Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder explained that the transition to electric cars often stalls not because of desire but because of a lack of home‑charging options. “In Germany, a large portion of the population lives in shared housing, yet the parking areas associated with these buildings remain inadequately equipped with charging facilities” he said. The new programme, backed by €500 million, intends to change that.
The funding scheme is divided into three calls, targeting homeowners’ associations, small and medium‑sized enterprises, and housing development companies. The total grant pool available is up to €500 million. The National Control Centre for Charging Infrastructure oversees the programme’s content. Applications will open on 15 April 2026.
