Germany Fuel Prices Soar as Oil Crisis Continues

Fuel prices at German service stations rose sharply in the second week after war broke out in the Middle East.

On Tuesday the average price of a litre of Super E10 was €2.045, an increase of 14.8 cents from a week earlier, told an ADAC spokesperson to the dts Nachrichtenagentur. Diesel averaged €2.188, up 27.1 cents week‑on‑week.

With prices still climbing, critics are demanding stronger government action. Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern’s Minister‑President Manuela Schwesig criticised the rise as unjustifiable and called on the federal government to intervene under antitrust law, suggesting a fuel‑price cap and a capture of oil‑company profits. She reminded that the state had stepped in in 2022.

In a related statement before the coalition committee, the parliamentary manager of the Union faction in the Bundestag proposed limiting price changes at German filling stations to once a day, a rule already in place in Austria. He described the measure as a “good and quick response” and discussed it with RTL and ntv on Wednesday.
