Germany’s greenhouse‑gas emissions dropped only 0.1 % in 2025, the Federal Ministry of the Environment and the Federal Environment Agency announced on Saturday in Berlin. In total emissions of climate‑harmful gases fell by 0.9 million tonnes to 648.9 million tonnes of CO₂‑equivalent, a 48 % reduction since 1990.
Although the country met the limit set by the Climate Protection Act for 2025-661.6 million tonnes-the data reveal increasing pressure on Germany’s climate targets. Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) warned that progress is too slow, even as demand for electric vehicles and heat pumps rises sharply. The number of newly approved wind‑farm projects also reached a record high.
The transport and building sectors still need significant action. Transport sector emissions rose by 2.1 million tonnes to 146.3 million tonnes of CO₂‑equivalent, while the building sector saw a 3.4 million‑tonne increase to 103.4 million tonnes. The Federal Environment Agency stressed that additional climate‑protection measures are necessary to meet the 2030 goals and beyond.
