German Ski and Snowboard Imports Drop 30 Percent Over a Decade

Over the past decade, German imports of skis and snowboards have fallen by 29.8 %. In 2024, the country imported 518,800 pairs of equipment-incl. downhill skis, cross‑country skis, monoski and snowboards-valued at €71.7 million, according to Destatis. A decade earlier, 739,200 units were imported. The lowest imports in the last decade were in the pandemic year 2021, with only 405,100 pairs in that year.

Exports of the same products have also declined, but to a lesser degree: in 2024 Germany exported 523,100 skis and snowboards worth €95.2 million, down 18.8 % from 2014’s 644,500 units. This marks the first time since 2021 that Germany exported more skis and snowboards than it imported.

In 2024 about one‑third of the imported equipment came from China (36.7 %, 190,200 pairs). The next largest suppliers were Austria (24.0 %, 124,400 pairs) and Slovenia (8.2 %, 42,700 pairs), accounting for roughly two‑thirds of total imports. On the export side, 15.7 % went to France (82,100 pairs), followed closely by Austria (15.1 %, 78,800 pairs) and the United States (12.3 %, 64,400 pairs).

Among the 518,800 imported units, 305,700 pairs were downhill skis, representing 58.9 % of imports, while 136,000 pairs of snowboards and monoski made up 26.2 %. In exports, downhill skis dominated at 79.4 %, with snowboards and monoski at 17.5 %.
