German Retail Sales Dip 0.9% in January 2026

Retail sales in Germany fell 0.9 % in real terms after calendar‑ and seasonally adjusting, from December to January 2026. Nominal sales were unchanged month‑on‑month, according to provisional results announced by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Monday.

Against the same month last year, sales rose 1.2 % in real terms and 2.5 % nominally. For December 2025, after revising the preliminary figures, sales increased 1.2 % real (previous provisional: +0.1 %) and 1.1 % nominal (previous provisional: -0.1 %).

Food‑retail sales remained flat in real terms after calendar and seasonal adjustment in January 2026; nominal sales grew by 0.9 %. Compared with January 2025, food‑retail sales were up 2.2 % real and 4.5 % nominal.

Non‑food retail sales declined 1.7 % real and 1.0 % nominal versus the previous month, but were 0.4 % real and 0.8 % nominal higher than in January 2025.

Internet and mail‑order sales increased 2.5 % real and 3.5 % nominal month‑on‑month in January 2026. Year‑on‑year, these sales were 2.1 % real and 2.0 % nominal higher.
