The German Red Cross (DRK) warns that the current plans by the federal government to overhaul the voluntary service scheme risk falling short because of inadequate funding.
According to Nadja Saborowski, deputy head of the Youth and Welfare division, “today many young people cannot afford to undertake a volunteer service because the stipend is simply too low”. She added that for organisations such as the DRK it is essential to secure sufficient, long‑term financing-so that both staff and institutions enjoy stability and reliability.
Saborowski also expressed support for the announcement by Federal Education and Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU) that a draft bill will be presented later this year. “A robust civil alternative to compulsory military service is urgently needed to boost civic engagement and make society more resilient” she said. “Whether we make real progress with voluntary services will ultimately depend on the concrete details of the legislation”.
