German Railway Eyes Sale Of Global Operations

Deutsche Bahn appears to be considering selling its overseas operating division, which operates under the name ”DB International Operations”. The information comes from the ”Handelsblatt” tuesday edition, citing several company managers.

The unit is part of the larger DB E.C.O. Group and runs rail services in India, Uruguay, and most recently in Egypt. Together with its sister company, DB Engineering and Consulting-which has previously handled route‑planning projects in Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and Canada-the division generated just under €1 billion in revenue last year and made an operating profit of €35 million, making it profitable.

What will happen to the engineering‑and‑consulting arm is still unclear. A portion of its staff is also employed on infrastructure projects in Germany, such as the recent rehabilitation of the Riedbahn line between Frankfurt and Mannheim.

A Deutsche Bahn spokesperson told the paper that “projects and business will continue as under the current assignment”. The entire DB E.C.O. Group employs 8,500 people.
