The Central Association of German Poultry Farming (ZDG) says that the market supply of eggs is currently tight, but it does not expect any crisis around Easter.
“Supply on the market is presently limited” said ZDG president Hans‑Peter Goldnick in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” (Friday edition). “About 70 million new eggs hit the market daily. We’re not facing an egg crisis, and we’ll have enough eggs for Easter”.
Goldnick cited several reasons for the shortage. European animal disease outbreaks, such as avian flu, have reduced the number of laying hens and thus egg availability across the continent. The most important cause, he said, is the growing popularity of eggs.
“Per‑capita consumption in Germany rose from 236 to 255 eggs over the last two years” he explained. “The trend is still upward”.
