The CDU’s general secretary, Carsten Linnemann, has called for an acceleration in the introduction of the fuel discount, urging that it be available at gas stations by the first half of May, stating, “Perhaps we can achieve it by May 1st”. He believes that achieving this is a matter of political will, asserting that if something is desired, it can be accomplished. Linnemann reminded that since relief measures were promised, swift action was necessary, adding, “It used to be that the larger the billion-mark sum, the quicker it passed through the Bundestag”. Looking ahead, Linnemann did not rule out extending the fuel discount over the summer if gasoline prices remain high. He criticized the idea of setting a definitive end date, arguing that this would be incorrect. He emphasized the need to assist people in rural areas who lack alternative transportation options other than personal vehicles, while also acknowledging Chancellor Merz’s point that not everything can be solved merely with money. Separately, the CDU politician admitted that the tax reduction might not be completely passed on to car owners, but noted that during the previous fuel discount period, somewhere between 80 and 90 percent of the intended amount reached the drivers, expressing hope that the new efforts could achieve at least that level, if not more.
