German MP Slams Trump's Threat To Bomb Iranian Bridges As Unthinkable Strategy

The chairman of the defense committee in the German Bundestag, Thomas Röwekamp (CDU), expressed skepticism regarding Trump’s threats to bomb bridges in Iran, calling the proposed action an incomprehensible military strategy. Speaking to the television station “Welt” on Tuesday, Röwekamp stated, “At least we cannot recognize a strategy behind it”. He added that the situation is being handled without consultation within NATO and also without consultation with Germany as a partner. The CDU politician emphasized that the German government is making intensive efforts to halt these military actions and reach an agreement as soon as possible. However, he maintained that Iran must also contribute to de-escalation. Specifically, it must be ensured that future military attacks-whether originating from Iran itself or through its proxies, particularly against Israel-as well as the general threat level across Europe, are abandoned.

Röwekamp also dismissed the notion of the US leaving NATO, a threat Trump has repeatedly made. He commented, “It’s not that simple to leave NATO”. He concluded this point by noting that this type of rhetoric is not new, stating, “And we are already accustomed to this rhetoric from recent weeks and months”. When addressing the discussion surrounding Greenland, Röwekamp distinguished between presidential rhetoric and the established commitments of the alliance. He stressed, “We have made firm agreements regarding that, and I have no doubt that the US will adhere to the agreements reached within NATO in the future”.
