German Minister Defies Sugar Tax Vote Against Sweetened Drinks Cost

Federal Minister of Agriculture, Alois Rainer (CSU), stated to the “Rheinische Post” that his criticism regarding the increasing cost of sugar-sweetened beverages remains unchanged. While stressing his critical stance, the minister added that it is crucial that any potential revenue generated by such a tax is specifically directed toward the healthcare system.

This discussion comes amid plans by the federal cabinet, which introduced a reform to the statutory health insurance system on Wednesday. This reform includes provisions designed to introduce a levy on sugary drinks starting in 2028.

Historically, Rainer has consistently opposed the sugar tax policy. As far back as December of last year, the minister told the “Rheinische Post” that a sugar tax was unnecessary, pointing out that tax increases were not included in the coalition agreement.
