According to a new risk analysis by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, revealed by “Bild” Germany is woefully unprepared for a potential chemical weapons attack. The 38‑page report exposes serious gaps in protecting the public against the fallout of such an event. In a simulated “plausible scenario” an aggressor mobilizes on Germany’s eastern borders, targeting three locations across the country, and the analysis warns that thousands could die.
The most catastrophic attack is projected on the port mentioned in the study: within the first 15 hours, about 8,500 people could lose their lives, and more than 33,500 would suffer severe injuries-several thousand requiring intensive care. Over the following days and weeks, the report predicts several hundred additional deaths.
German hospitals would be overwhelmed. With only 1,700 intensive‑care beds and 800 monitoring beds available, the capacity is far below what is needed for such a disaster. Moreover, the analysis highlights a critical shortage of protective gear and antidotes such as atropine.
