German Interior Minister Dobrindt Endorses Hungary's 8‑Year Jail Term for Maja T Linked to Leftist Extremist Group

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) said that the disputed eight‑year prison sentence handed to Maja T. by a Hungarian court was inevitable. Speaking to the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland, he stated that Maja T. belongs to a left‑extremist group that attacked other people with batons, rubber hammers and other weapons. He added that severe bodily injuries occurred, including a skull fracture, and that this should lead to a conviction.

Dobrindt defended the Hungarian trial, arguing that because the alleged crimes were committed in Hungary, nothing could be objected to the proceeding and its outcome. Maja T., a non‑binary German national, is accused of attacking several alleged right‑wing extremists in Budapest in February 2023 alongside other defendants who are on trial in Germany. The Federal Constitutional Court had earlier declared her extradition to Hungary unlawful. According to the Berlin public prosecutor’s office, a binding guarantee is in place for her return to Germany.
