According to preliminary data released by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Friday, the hospitality sector in Germany showed a seasonally adjusted real decline of 3.9 percent in January 2026 compared with December 2025. Nominal sales, however, remained unchanged relative to the previous month. When measured against the same month last year, revenue fell by 5.0 percent in real terms but rose by 2.0 percent nominally.
In the revised result for December 2025, sales were 0.6 percent lower in real terms than in November 2025 (the earlier provisional estimate had shown a 1.2 percent drop). Nominal sales were unchanged versus November, following a provisional figure of a 0.6 percent decline.
Looking at individual subsectors, hotels and other accommodation providers reported a 3.2 percent real drop and a 2.6 percent decline in nominal sales in January 2026 compared with December 2025. Compared with January 2025, real revenue was down 2.8 percent while nominal revenue increased by 1.4 percent.
Restaurants and other dining services recorded a real reduction of 4.3 percent and a nominal increase of 0.9 percent in January 2026 versus December 2025. When compared with January 2025, real revenue fell by 5.9 percent, but nominal revenue rose by 2.4 percent.
