Ministry of Health Nina Warken (CDU) is planning to launch an initiative so that the Bundestag can, in a conscience‑driven decision, allow egg‑donation. “Many couples with a child‑bearing wish are currently going abroad” she told the Tagesspiegel. “I want to help those couples here in Germany in a regulated framework, while still maintaining clear limits”. If an egg‑donation can take place after a fertility treatment has already produced eggs, “those eggs could be made available for donation without needing additional procurement” Warken explained. She is not advocating for an open‑door policy; instead, she maintains a restrictive stance.
Warken will now discuss the possible release of egg donation with Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig (SPD) and Family Minister Karin Prien (CDU). “We will then talk to the coalition factions and see if there is a proposal from the centre of parliament, as is customary with ethical questions” the minister said.
Egg donation involves implanting the egg of one woman into another woman’s uterus. This procedure has not been permitted in Germany because of the risks to the donors and concerns that the child would, from some perspectives, have two biological mothers. The Women’s Union, whose chair is Warken, has already advocated for allowing egg donation. No provision on the matter is included in the coalition agreement.
