German Green Leader Calls Mercosur Vote a Mistake

Franziska Brantner, chair of the Greens’ parliamentary group, strongly criticized how many Greens in the European Parliament voted on the Mercosur agreement.
She told the news portal T‑Online that yesterday’s vote was a mistake. “In these geopolitically fraught times we need reliable partners and new markets, which is why I’ve been a clear advocate for this deal” she said.

Brantner added that many colleagues in Strasbourg had wanted to establish legal certainty and clarify open questions for the national parliaments. She said that when European unity was expected to be shown against the Trump administration, the vote sent a completely wrong signal. She warned that majorities should not be formed with far‑right and extremist parties.

At the same time, the co‑chair of the Greens said that the German Greens, both in Germany and in the European Parliament, would support the provisional application of the agreement. “I would be genuinely angry if Mercosur were actually prevented-if opposition stood fundamentally against it and rejected the provisional application” she said, but still called the vote “wrong”.
