The federal government remains open to all options regarding a possible German participation in security measures in the Strait of Hormuz. “That is something we will consider when the time comes, and I cannot speculate at this point” a spokesperson from the Defense Ministry told the dts news agency on Friday.
As the Bundeswehr, they possess a range of capabilities that can be deployed across the different branches of the armed forces, allowing both support and direct action. These capabilities are broadly applicable and are not limited solely to a potential deployment in the Middle East. The spokesperson added that they continue to exchange information and will assess how best to employ these assets should the situation arise.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) reiterated after the EU summit that Germany could also take part in such security measures in the critical maritime corridor for global energy supply. His condition is that hostilities must first be concluded.
