German Foreign Office Welcomes Venezuela Amnesty Law While Urging Further Action

The German Foreign Office has welcomed the Venezuelan Parliament’s recently adopted amnesty law in principle, but it stresses that further action is still necessary.

In a statement to the agency DRS on Friday, a ministry spokesperson highlighted Germany’s long‑standing criticism of Venezuela’s difficult human‑rights situation and the repression of its opposition. He noted that the Venezuelan government has already begun releasing political prisoners, describing this as an important first sign that could lead to more constructive relations.

The law, which was passed unanimously by the legislature, could be “just another step in the right direction” the spokesperson said. What matters now is how the law is implemented, and that will be the basis for future assessments. “It is essential that the political detainees actually be released” he added.

Looking ahead, he reaffirmed Germany’s belief that a democratic transition is still required in Venezuela. “We advocate for that in all our discussions” he said, pointing out that the current solution would involve sitting President Delcy Rodriguez. “Ultimately the people of Venezuela must have the opportunity to determine their government freely and democratically-something that has not been possible in the past”.

The law is intended to grant amnesty to all charges brought against political opponents since 1999, potentially freeing hundreds of political prisoners. It does exclude severe crimes and those who have called for military actions against the country.
