Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) expressed surprise at Hungary’s recent blockade of EU aid to Ukraine. Speaking before consultations with fellow EU officials in Brussels, he said, “I am astonished by Hungary’s position”. He added that Germany would discuss the issue with its Hungarian counterpart and that they do not think it is correct for Hungary to betray its own fight for freedom and European sovereignty. Therefore he plans to bring arguments to Budapest and Brussels alike, urging Hungary to reconsider its stance.
“Ultimately, a look at history should show that staying euro‑centric is the right path” Wadephul noted. “We Germans owe Hungary much. We recognize that Hungary has ultimately chosen freedom, and that should guide the correct orientation today”.
Hungary had recently threatened to block the €90 billion aid package for Ukraine. The backdrop to the threat involves allegations that Kyiv deliberately prevented oil deliveries to Hungary.
