In light of recent talks aimed at ending the Iran war, Thomas Röwekamp, chair of the Bundestag’s Defence Committee, is urging a German military presence in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Stability in the Gulf is of central importance to our security interests” Röwekamp told the “Rheinische Post” in its Saturday edition. “Therefore I believe it is right for us to step in- for example, by protecting shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz”. He clarified that the proposal is not about combat operations but about taking responsibility in the post‑combat phase.
Röwekamp noted that a similar deployment is already envisaged under the European Union’s Aspides maritime mission, which covers the regional framework. “Anyone who seeks reliable stability must not shy away from that responsibility” he said.
