The German District Council Conference (DLT) is urgently calling for a rapid agreement on a continuation strategy for the fuel discount, which is set to expire at the end of the month. Speaking to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”, DLT President Achim Brötel stated that given the current geopolitical climate, he does not anticipate a swift reduction in energy prices. Therefore, he argued that the government must begin planning now how to provide relief to affected citizens not only during the summer but potentially for longer. Brötel stressed the need for a comprehensive solution in a timely manner, critically adding that this cannot involve further internal disputes within the coalition government.
For many people residing in rural areas, additional financial support is described as essential for daily life. According to the president, high fuel costs particularly impact these communities because the commute to workplaces is generally significantly longer. He pointed out that if the stated goal of achieving equal living standards is truly to be taken seriously, then corresponding financial compensation must be implemented.
Brötel suggested that the primary focus should not be on the specific mechanism of relief-whether it takes the form of a fuel discount, an increase in the commuter allowance, or other instruments. What matters most is ensuring that the financial support reaches people who live outside of major urban centers.
