German CDU Vice‑Chair Sees Chance for Nuclear Power Comeback

Sepp Müller, the deputy chair of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, says that nuclear power could see a comeback in Germany. He welcomed Ursula von der Leyen’s remarks, describing the country’s move away from nuclear as a “strategic mistake”. According to Müller, the future of nuclear hinges on developing small, safe reactors that can deliver cheap electricity. He also stressed the importance of fusion research, stating that it will become a key energy source and that the federal government is doing everything it can to advance that field.

In the industry sector, Oliver Zander, chief executive of the employers’ association Gesamtmetall, added that manufacturers need low electricity prices and reliable power to stay competitive. He argued that a broader energy supply-including nuclear-could keep prices down over the long term, and called for an unbiased examination of the topic in Germany.
