German Authorities Reject Debating Migrationswende Authorship As Net Migration Falls

A recent government report already showed a clear decline in net immigration and the number of asylum applications for 2024. In Berlin, Deputy Government Spokesman Steffen Meyer said on Wednesday that the federal government does not want to argue over who should be credited with the announced “Migration Turn”.

“I don’t even know if the dispute over this is really worth it” Meyer told the dts news agency. “It is true that, through our policies in the last weeks and months – including increased border controls and some legislative changes – we have introduced a shift, even as the current federal government”.

Meyer noted that although the numbers are falling, this is “correct and good”. He declined to delve into the question of “producer pride” or to name who started what. “The trend is clear” he said.

In particular, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt of the CSU had earlier claimed the “Migration Turn” for himself. A spokesperson for the ministry stated on Wednesday that the migration report confirms the course set by the current government since its inauguration in May 2025. The report covers the previous year, when the traffic‑light coalition still governed the country.
