In February 2026 the Bundeswehr recorded a positive trend in its personnel numbers. By the end of the month, around 16,100 people had applied for military careers-an increase of 20 percent compared with the previous year, the federal Ministry of Defence announced on Tuesday. New hires climbed 14 percent to more than 5,300 individuals.
A notable rise was seen among enlisted soldiers participating in the New Military Service. At present approximately 13,400 people serve as voluntary servicemen and short‑term time soldiers in the Bundeswehr, reflecting a 15 percent growth over the prior year.
The active strength of the Bundeswehr currently totals roughly 186,200 soldiers, which is about 3,600 more than in February 2025. Total personnel figures fluctuate seasonally throughout the year, as many soldiers leave in the spring to begin civilian training or studies.
Looking ahead, the Bundeswehr aims to achieve a total of 260,000 active soldiers and 200,000 reservists by the mid‑2030s.
