The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced that producer prices for agricultural products in December 2025 were 8.3 percent lower than in December 2024. In the two preceding months, the year‑on‑year change had been -5.7 percent in November and -1.7 percent in October, and compared with November the December price level fell 1.6 percent.
Plant‑based products fell by 11.5 percent relative to December 2024, whereas prices for animals and animal products were 6.4 percent lower than a year earlier. Against the previous month, the trend was reversed: plant‑product prices rose 1.2 percent, while animal‑product prices dropped 3.0 percent. The decline in plant‑product prices is attributed mainly to a 48 percent reduction in the price of table potatoes compared with December 2024 (a year‑on‑year drop of -45.6 percent in November and -41.8 percent in October). Potato prices also slipped 1.5 percent versus November 2025.
Fruit prices were 18.5 percent lower in December 2025 than a year earlier, with table apples falling 20.3 percent. Vegetable prices, however, rose 4.2 percent over the year, driven by higher prices for lettuce (+15.0 percent), cucumbers (+11.7 percent) and mushrooms (+8.6 percent). Cabbage and tomato prices fell sharply, declining 28.9 percent and 6.4 percent respectively within the year.
Cereals were 16.0 percent cheaper in December 2025 than in December 2024. Overall, trade crops priced 4.9 percent lower than a year ago; rapeseed fell 9.4 percent. Feed‑crop prices dropped 9.2 percent year‑on‑year. Wine prices increased 1.7 percent versus December 2024.
The 6.4 percent fall in animal‑product prices was largely caused by a drop in milk prices, which were 17.3 percent lower than a year earlier and 6.1 percent lower than in November. Eggs, in contrast, rose 13.0 percent over the year. Animal prices in December 2025 were 1.2 percent higher than in December 2024, largely due to a 27.1 percent rise in cattle prices; slaughter‑pig prices fell 16.1 percent. Poultry prices were 5.3 percent higher than a year ago, driven by a 14.0 percent increase in the price of other poultry (ducks and turkeys), while chicken prices slightly slipped by 0.1 percent.
On an annual basis, Destatis reports a 0.3 percent increase in producer prices for agricultural products in 2025 compared with 2024, after a 1.1 percent decline in 2024 year‑on‑year. In 2025, plant‑product prices were 9.6 percent lower than the previous year, whereas animal‑product prices were 6.5 percent higher-especially milk (+8.9 percent), eggs (+6.8 percent), and animals (+4.8 percent). Within the plant‑product sector, potatoes fell 44.0 percent, feed crops down 8.6 percent, and vegetables down 8.2 percent. Cereals dropped 3.2 percent. Conversely, fruit climbed 2.5 percent, wine rose 1.6 percent, and plants and flowers increased 1.3 percent. Trade‑crop prices were modestly higher, up 0.1 percent year‑on‑year.
