Gas Station Association Slams New Fuel Discount Calling It A Short Term Fix

The gas station association believes that the coalition’s measure to lower fuel prices by 17 cents for two months through a reduction in the mineral oil tax is ineffective. According to association spokesperson Herbert Rabl, this is “nothing I support. It is an absolute knee-jerk reaction”. While acknowledging the desire to ease financial burdens for consumers, Rabl noted that lessons from the Ukraine crisis taught them that corporations have not always passed on tax relief in its entirety. Since this cannot be guaranteed, Rabl argued that price controls must instead be imposed on the companies, stating, “It can only be done by using firm measures targeting the oil cartels while simultaneously reducing taxes”. He concluded that failure to take such action would leave them “at the mercy of the cartels”.
