G-BA Chairman Spurs Debate Over Free Spouse Insurance in German Health Reform

Chairman of the Joint Federal Committee (G‑BA), Josef Hecken, supports ending the provision that allows spouses to be covered without having to pay premiums. “I would personally welcome a discussion about the merits of a contribution‑free spouse insurance” he told Politico. He believes it is reasonable for a spouse who is not in employment to pay at least a minimum contribution, but he says the committee would never consider waiving premiums for children.

The employer association BDA has proposed that spouses in the family insurance scheme should be required to pay a contribution. The suggestion is that they should pay a minimum of €220 per month if they have no or modest income. Health Minister Warken is awaiting the GKV Finance Commission’s proposals, expected by the end of the month, before she gives a statement.
