Former SPD member of the Bundestag Sönke Rix is expected to be named by the federal cabinet as the new president of the Federal Agency for Civic Education on Wednesday. The information comes from the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” citing government circles.
Rix, 50, hails from Schleswig‑Holstein and served in parliament from 2005 until 2025, most recently as deputy faction leader. He was part of the Parliamentary Left and focused mainly on education, media, and cultural issues.
The agency’s former president, Thomas Krüger, retired at the start of September last year, and Rix had long been viewed as a likely successor. However, reports suggest the official appointment was stalled because a vice‑president from the Union ranks was still being sought. It is unclear whether that position has since been filled.
