Former German Foreign Minister Fischer Warns of Iran's State Collapse Amid US Military Actions

Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, a member of the Greens, criticised the ongoing U.S. military deployment in Iran. Speaking to the newspaper “Handelsblatt”, he said President Trump had not fully considered the consequences. Although Washington pursues a regime‑change goal, it appears to have no plan for the post‑war period.

Fischer, who served as foreign minister in the SPD‑Green coalition under Gerhard Schröder from 1998 to 2005, likened the situation to Libya. He warned that if Iran slides into a civil‑war‑like conflict, a humanitarian and geopolitical catastrophe could spill over throughout the Middle East.

At the same time Fischer cautioned that should the regime survive the war, it would emerge “stronger than ever” and accelerate its nuclear ambitions.
