Finance Ministry Slams Rich Says No Additional Revenue From Energy Hike

The Federal Ministry of Finance anticipates receiving smaller revenue from the value-added tax than the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs had suggested. A ministry spokesperson told the dts news agency on Friday in Berlin that, based on current figures, there is no expectation of increased income. The ministry’s reasoning, speaking for Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD), points to a “reduced consumption” and a “certain consumer restraint due to the high prices” following the Iran crisis. This view contradicts statements made by Economic Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU). Minister Reiche predicts an additional revenue stream of 200 million euros, which, she stated on Friday, “should not remain in the Federal Ministry of Finance”. Instead, she advocates that these funds be used to boost the commuter allowance, establish a direct disbursement system for commuters with particularly long journeys, and lower the truck diesel tax. Furthermore, the CDU politician firmly rejects the idea of an “excess profit tax” on mineral oil corporations, as demanded by the SPD and its party leader, Klingbeil.
