The real, price-adjusted order intake in the general construction sector increased by 7.6 percent in February 2026 compared to January 2026, according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
Looking at month-on-month changes, the order intake grew by 8.6 percent in high-rise construction and 6.7 percent in underground construction. Over a less volatile three-month period (from December 2025 to February 2026), the adjusted order intake was 4.6 percent lower than the three months prior (showing decreases of -9.2 percent for high-rise and -0.4 percent for underground).
In comparison to February 2025, the real, price-adjusted order intake in the general construction sector rose by 9.8 percent in February 2026. Separately, high-rise construction increased by 0.4 percent, while underground construction saw a significant jump of 19.2 percent. When considering nominal (non-price-adjusted) figures, the order intake was 12.0 percent higher than the previous year.
Financial performance showed a different trend, as real revenue in the general construction sector declined by 13.2 percent in February 2026 year-over-year. The nominal revenue fell by 10.8 percent during the same period, reaching 6.3 billion euros.
Regarding employment, the number of people employed in the general construction sector rose by 0.9 percent in February 2026 compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 537,000 workers. These figures, reported by the federal office, pertain only to firms employing 20 or more staff members.
